Machame
The Machame Route, often referred to as the “Whiskey Route,” is known for its physical challenge and scenic beauty. It differs significantly from the Marangu Route due to the volcanic activity of Mount Kibo, which was more intense on the western side. As a result, Machame is steeper and more rugged, especially during the initial one and a half days of the climb, offering a more adventurous experience for trekkers.
The journey begins at Machame Village, ascending through a lush rainforest to the first camp at around 3,000 meters. The trail then transitions into moorland and leads to the Shira Campsite, which provides stunning views of the expansive Shira Plateau. From Shira, the route follows the traditional Shira Track to the Lava Tower, where it merges with the Umbwe Route. Climbers then continue on the steeper ascent via the Arrow Glacier path, leading to the summit. The descent is made through the Mweka Route, completing a breathtaking and diverse trekking circuit on Africa’s highest mountain.
