Marangu
The Machame Route differs physically from the Marangu Route due to Kibo’s main volcanic activity, which occurred more toward the west—making Machame steeper and more rugged, especially during the first day and a half of the climb. Unlike the gentler and more gradual Marangu Route, Machame challenges climbers with its varied terrain and steeper inclines, appealing to those seeking a more adventurous ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The route begins at Machame Village and ascends through lush forest to the first camp at 3,000 meters. It then continues through scenic moorlands to the Shira Camp, offering panoramic views of the Shira Plateau. From there, climbers follow the Shira Route to the Lava Tower, where it merges with the Umbwe Route before tackling the steep ascent via Arrow Glacier. The final summit attempt proceeds from here, with the descent made through the Mweka Route.
